Possibilities for Viewing the Herons During the Nesting Season
Viewing Corridors:
The heron nests in Kiwanis Ravine used to be visible from the pedestrian bridge over the BNSF railroad, up the hillside from Hiram M. Chittenden Locks along the Ship Canal. However, the trees in the ravine have grown so much over the years that the nests are no longer visible from the bridge. HHH is exploring other possibilities for viewing corridors, but that is a long term project.
Your best bet for viewing the herons live and in person in Seattle would be to see them nesting in Commodore Park, near the Locks. See a map and some photos here.
The HeronCam: Live Feed from heron nests in Kiwanis Ravine
Pan-Tilt-Zoom Camera: (during nesting season only)
Be sure to turn on your speakers. The audio component gives the display really strong impact.
Many thanks to the students at the Crest Learning Center, Mercer Island School District, for donating money for the heroncam computer. Thanks, also, to the team of partners, whose logos appear in the left column, who helped make this live feed display happen.
This heron camera is part of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Wildwatch system of cameras. Wildlife Viewing The live feeds from these cameras stream family video of many creatures in addition to herons. It is an honor for HHH to support this program.
Viewing Tower:
HHH is also exploring the feasibility of building a viewing tower. This would be a complicated project because there are many concerns to be considered, but some other natural areas have viewing towers or platforms, which give tremendous viewing pleasure.
