Second Saturday Work Party for May:
Gorilla FC to the rescue!

This was Seattle Works Day, and Seattle Works kindly arranged for the group, Gorilla FC, to come help us to do weeding and maintenance at KRS, Kiwanis Ravine Stevens. We enjoyed a splendid day of sunshine, and we got quite a bit accomplished. Common grasses from the old Stevens place have been taking over the meadow and choking out the natives that we have planted over the last few years. The project was too large for one or two folks, but Gorilla FC showed up with six hard workers. They were a great group of friendly, fun folks who had no problem getting down and dirty.

We changed our hosting hours to 10 AM to 2 PM today to accommodate the needs of Seattle Works, but with the good weather that happened today, by Noon time we started getting really hot. Earlier hours will definitely hold an advantage as the weather warms up. Naturally, we are very, very grateful for the help volunteered, but the biggest pleasure for me was hanging out with and working with the folks from Gorilla FC. They are great folks!

We were hoping to have another work party at KWC, the Kiwanis Wildlife Corridor, on May 19th, but that has fallen through until June.

What if Discovery Park and Kiwanis Memorial Preserve Park were connected?

Heron Habitat Helpers have often fantasized about connecting Kiwanis Ravine to the land in Discovery Park. This connection would allow the wildlife a direct connection between two wonderful natural areas. With 36th Ave. W running between the two parks, such a connection would be very difficult, but what if the connection were underground? In rural areas wildlife tunnels are used routinely, so that animals need not risk their lives to cross the road. Interstate 90 has some of these tunnels installed, saving deer and bears, as well as smaller critters, from physical harm.
